UK School Games- Saturday 3rd September 2011


The Sainsbury’s UK School Games is a multi-sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes of school age. Camberley Judo Club’s had 2 fighters selected to represent England in the event which took place in Sheffield from Friday 2nd September to Sunday 4th September. Robyn Irwin at -63kg and Lasha Lekishvilli at -66kg. Despite their young age both fighters are extremely dedicated and train full time at Camberley judo club with the Elite Team.


Competing on Saturday Lasha convincingly won his pool winning all fights by ippon one of which he scored in just 42 seconds! In the semi final he faced Connor Ireland from Wales who came through his pool second with 2 ippon wins. Lasha controlled the fight and won by wazari throw. This put him in the final against Danny Lyon also representing England and a fierce rival in the weight category. The fight went to full time with Lasha winning by wazari throw and taking the Gold medal.


Also on Saturday was Robyn Irwin, who followed in Lasha’s foot steps and won her pool by maximum points too with a hold down and a strangle for ippon. In the semi final she faced Scottish fighter Malin Wilson, not wanting to be out performed by her club mate, Robyn pulled out an ippon throw in an impressive 34 seconds! Bringing the Camberley fighter to battle against the other English competitor, Rebecca Coxon, in the final. The tough fight saw Robyn reign victorious and completing the Camberley fighters domination that day of their respective weight categories.
